The Watareka detention centre Inmates, boys below 22 years, who are resident in the premises while schooling and learning different skills celebrated Christmas with WCIC virtual musical show which included sing along music and a special meal. Mr. Chandana Ekanayake, Director, Commissioner Administration and Rehabilitation Department of Prisons joined the event and in his address said “What we need for this country is a good team of youngsters who can take it forward and my wish is that all of you learn new skills which will guide you for life and build your personalities and come out as strong individuals.” The Watareka centre is a college in itself where the children and young adults learn new skills for employment as well as life skills and good habits to guide them once back in society.
The SP in charge of the prison centre Mr. Kolongahapitiya was very supportive for the cause with his team consisting of the Chief Jailor. Ms. Sunethra Weerasinghe, President, Prison Welfare Society, brought up the suggestion of gifting plates and making Christmas a happy one for the youngsters. The Lanka Woman team together with a few generous donors was able to sponsor the boys a meal and 50 high quality stainless steel plates as gifts for Christmas under the guidance of Mr. Chandana Ekanayake, Director Prisons, Commissioner Administration and Rehabilitation.
