The Ambassador of Japan His Excellency Kenichi Suganuma who was the Guest of Honour at the opening, inspected and admired the displayed works of art and in his address congratulated Emiko and the six artists Jun Nishimura, Nao Ushimura, Kazuo Kobayashi, Kanako Yoguchi, Kyoko Maruta and Mika Funaki who arrived specially for the occasion from Japan.
The Ambassador said, “We now have a gallery that displays Japanese art here. Japanese culture is very wide and diversified, we have many aspects and these are flourishing in various ways in Japan and when you talk about Japanese culture, often you think about Ikebana, Origami, Bonsai, etc.
We have been trying to introduce that to other countries, and of course here we have a strong support of these arts too. But this is only a small part of Japanese culture and I always wanted to introduce other aspects of Japanese culture. Of course it is not only Japanese culture anymore.
Although it can be done by Japanese artists, it is universal.” The Ambassador also said that while he congratulates the six artists, Emiko and everyone who supported her in this venture, in future we can think of exchange of Japanese artists and Sri Lankan artists as well as European artists and that Colombo is becoming a platform for exchange of artists and their work. Among the invitees were the Ambassador for the European Union H. E. Tun Lai Margue and his wifewho also addressed the gathering, many distinguished guests who included foreign diplomats and most of the expat community from Colombo and Galle.
