World Teachers’ Day

Who is a Teacher ?
In many sources, a teacher is defined as a person who helps students acquire knowledge, competence and virtue via the practice of teaching/instructing. This encompasses a number of roles a teacher is required to play during any given working day. As well as imparting knowledge , a teacher is required to be a carer, a mother/father, a nurse, a counselor as well as a friend according to the need of the hour.

October 5th commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendations regarding the Status of Teachers. It set out benchmarks regarding rights and responsibilities of teachers, standards, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions. In 2024, the focus will be on Valuing Teachers’ voices : Towards a New Social Contract for Education.
