Stem Cell Use in Orthopaedics
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells with the potential to develop into various cell types in the body. In orthopaedics, they are used for their ability to repair and regenerate damaged tissues, offering a promising alternative to traditional treatments.
Types of Stem Cells
- Embryonic Stem Cells: Derived from early-stage embryos, these cells can differentiate into almost any cell type but raise ethical concerns and are mostly used in research.
- Adult Stem Cells: Found in tissues like bone marrow and fat, these cells are more limited in their differentiation but are ethically uncomplicated and widely used in treatments. These are called Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs): MSCs can differentiate into bone, cartilage, and muscle cells, making them particularly useful in orthopaedic applications.
