Dr. Rasarie Wimalana is a certified practitioner in lifestyle medicine from the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine and the Founder and Chairperson of Sajeevan Lifestyle Medicine. She also serves as a Vice President of the Sri Lankan Society of Lifestyle Medicine and is a visiting lecturer in health psychology. Dr. Rasarie Wimalana is a passionate advocate for lifestyle medicine, a field transforming chronic disease management worldwide. This approach utilizes six vital lifestyle pillars, which are not just tools for prevention but also powerful means to treat chronic illnesses, offering hope and health to many.  Her journey is unconven-tional and inspiring. Starting in the demanding critical care unit, Dr. Rasarie Wimalana witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of chronic diseases. Today, she shares an uplifting and impactful message, highlighting the profound benefits of adopting an evidence-based lifestyle as medicine.

Can you tell us a bit about Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses evidence-based, whole-person lifestyle changes as the main approach to prevent and treat chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and more. These positive changes focus on six lifestyle pillars: nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, managing risky substances, and building strong social connections. Lifestyle medicine gets to the root of chronic diseases and can often reverse them when applied intensively. It’s a hopeful message: if lifestyle is part of the problem, it can also be part of the cure.
