Ultrasound examination of baby’s head , abdomen and thigh bone is done to obtain the measurements around the head and abdomen and the length of the thigh bone (femur length). The ultrasound machine gives the estimated weight of the baby using these measurements and a mathematical formula. Once your doctor gets the estimated weight of the baby, the weight is plotted in a standard chart which gives the correct weight for a particular period of pregnancy.
