With the number of home-based bakers in Colombo rising every day, it is easy for a small scale baker to fade into oblivion. However, if you taste any goodie from B’s Treat, you will know that it is definitely here to stay. This is because Bavanthi Ariyaratne knows how to mix a batter and bake a sweet treat that is gooey, moist and simply melts in your mouth. With Bavanthi’s decadent and delicious brownies, puddings and cakes, B’s Treat are truly an indulgent treat!
"By profession I am a Brand Manager at a bank but I have always had a knack for cooking. Even when I was young I loved to cook and I loved to eat what I cooked. Both cooking and eating are my favourite hobbies even now,” Bavanthi said with a laugh. She explained that she started her baking venture in November last year.
“At office I used to make brownies and cakes for my colleagues as treats. They loved them and encouraged me to get into business with my own home bakery. They started giving me orders themselves whenever they needed cakes, brownies or other baked goodies. In a year my tiny business has received an unbelievably positive reception. Now I get orders even from people living abroad who want to share some home-baked goodness with their loved ones,” she said enthusiastically.
One of Bavanthi’s most popular specialties is her brownie cake topped with rich chocolate ganache and strawberries.
Another is her beautifully decorated (customizable) and absolutely delightful ribbon cakes with butter cream frosting. Some of the other items on her menu include brownies, chocolate biscuit puddings, caramel pudding, chocolate cakes, coffee cakes, cheesecakes, kaluwa and rum infused chocolate cakes and brownie cakes and a range of other desserts. She also offers seasonal desserts such as fruit and nut brownies during Christmas time.
“I think one of the reasons my ribbon cake is so popular is because of the unique colour combinations I use and the neatness of the finish. And of course people love the way they taste. They always come back for seconds. Another popular treat is the choco biscuit pudding which is layered with white and milk chocolate mousse,” she claimed.
Speaking about her daily schedule Bavanthi explained that things tend to get very busy because she was juggling a fulltime job with baking. “I love baking and I love banking so I don’t want to give either one up.” Bavanthi said what makes her desserts extra special is that she pays special attention to the ingredients and uses the best quality products to make her goodies. Bavanthi delivers her orders in and around Colombo and hopes to open her own outlet in the near future. So if you are looking to treat yourself or your loved ones with mouth-watering treats, head to B’s Treat and immerse yourself in the comfort of sugar, flour and butter.
