Steering young minds towards values

18 July 2024 07:21 am

Working with young adults has given me renewed direction. I find myself questioning EVERYTHING from lifestyles to attitudinal issues. It does seem that unless and until a third person sets foot and addresses crucial areas of standards, parents of young adults are willing to look away. They’d rather do that than face the music of verbal onslaught. It is a worrying factor when young people have no clue about deadlines, transparency and ethics. These are soft skills they would need throughout life should they decide to be parents themselves. The quality of human interactions are in tatters.

In higher educational programs which calls for critical thinking most students find this area a blur. In a country where chalk-talk is still the method of delivery, once out of the cocoon and on their own, thinking for  themselves is a maze. Some mothers have to be instructed as to their intervening in-between sessions. “Have you had anything to eat ?” is most often the question. We are discussing young adults here, not toddlers and yet most mothers feel left out if they are not in the loop. “Is there any work she has to do at home?” Is another question. Students are informed of assignments (not called homework anymore!) where they need to do engage in independent reading and referencing. Most students are not ready. They believe that cut/paste will get them the desired qualification!!! I’m wondering if they are led to believe his is the way forward. Most students know the word plagiarism without knowing they are plagiarists. The value of honesty and right thinking have barely crossed their minds.
