“Silent night, Holy night, All is calm, All is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child, Sleep in Heavenly Peace…”
This beautiful carol provides the setting for Christmas. Midnight Mass is the highlight as Christians commemorate the birth of their Saviour. In Christian homes, there is much excitement as December 25th approaches, There is secrecy as gifts are bought and wrapped and houses are decorated. But wait a minute. Are all these external preparations necessary to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus? The Angel of the Lord appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee”. Mary was troubled and wondered what this greeting could mean. Then the Angel reassured her and said “Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.” Then Mary asked “How can this be since I am a virgin?” The Angel told her that she would bear a child since she was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit.
