Losing around 100 strands of hair a day is normal. This doesn’t cause noticeable thinning of scalp because new hair grows at the same time. However if more hair loss occurs, it becomes a problem. If you are worried about your hair loss, it is best to seek help from your doctor. If your hair loss is sudden or patchy, seek help. If your hair loss becomes more than usual while bathing or combing discuss with your doctor, because it may be due to an underlying medical condition which can be treated.
Your doctor will take a detailed history about the onset, duration and exclude common medical conditions and hormonal changes leading to hair loss. He may order blood tests where necessary like testing for thyroxin deficiency. Treat the cause - If a treatable cause is found, appropriate treatment will be started. Ex: Tinea / ring worm infection – treat with antifungals Alopecia areata with intra-lesional steroids If your hair loss is a result of an underlying medical condition, treatment will usually reverse the hair loss. Hypothyroidism – treated with thyroxin If your hair loss is due to certain medications that you are on, your doctor will try to change the medicines wherever possible.
