Speaking about her experience in the field she noted “I’ve been in the field for 20 years, out of which 16 years I have been at Ramani Fernando Salons. Initially, I started my basic beauty course at Janet Salons and thereafter graduated in beauty therapy in Australia. After working with Ramani for 16 years and with my experience and qualifications I decided to venture on my own.” She also elaborated on the latest trends in hair and beauty adding “If I talk about hair colouring it is amber that is the trend these days. For hair styles soft curl setting and water fall braiding are in fashion. Thick and long eyebrows are also in style. For makeup I recommend a soft and subtle makeup and for the younger generation it can be heavy eyes and pale lips.”
Dr. Fish Spa Therapy
The salon which is known for providing its customers a gamut of effective and innovative treatments that cater to the individuals specific needs, also offers one of the most revolutionary therapies in the city; the ‘one of a kind’ Dr. Fish Spa Therapy, a unique treatment, which has become the talk of the town. Speaking about this popular treatment Kanthie noted, “Dr. Fish Spa Therapy uses Dr. Fish, also known as Garrarufa fish that have a unique dietary habit where they would naturally peck away the dead skin on your feet.”
Enlightening us about what inspired her to start the Dr. Fish Spa Therapy she told LW “During my travels across the world, I noticed how popular this therapy had become so I was keen on introducing it here in Sri Lanka for my clients to indulge in” and added “the therapy has become very popular, with most of my clients finding it an interesting alternative to the usual pedicure that they get. There are absolutely no side effects from this therapy and it’s safe for just about anyone.” When I was invited to experience the Dr. Fish Spa Therapy by Kanthie, at first, I was a bit hesitant at the thought of having scores of fish nibble at my feet. But Kanthie assured me that it was going to be an interesting experience that I was definitely going to enjoy, and it turned out to be exactly that. Before I dipped my feet into the tank with lots of Dr. Fish swimming in them, my feet were washed and sanitized to ensure that there was no dirt, grim or residue of creams that could affect the treatment.
Once that was over and done with, all I had to do was dip my feet into the tank with the fish and watch the magic happen. It was fascinating to watch these little fish rush towards my feet at the speed of lightning. They didn’t waste a second; they just began nibbling away at the dead skin. I was informed by Kanthie that these fish don’t have teeth; therefore they simply nibble and suck the dead skin so there is no need to worry about the fish removing live skin or being bitten. For someone who is experiencing this therapy for the first time, it takes a little getting used to, the sensations are overwhelming at the beginning, but you get used to it gradually and begin to relax and enjoy this novel therapy. My initial fears were put to rest because there was no pain or discomfort, all throughout the therapy, even while the nibbling was going on; rather there was a feeling of total relaxation. The therapy ended with an invigorating massage to the feet, which left me feeling absolutely pampered. How about that for a pedicure with a twist? How long does it take?
