Australia’s Migration Program is made up of two streams – the Family Stream and the Skill Stream. Within each stream, there is a range of visa options.
Australia’s skilled migration program aims to address domestic skill gaps and position Australia to better meet the challenges of an ageing population, without displacing opportunities for Australians. In an attempt to meet Australia’s economic, demographic, and labour market needs, it focuses on four key segments:
General skilled migration, for skilled workers who do not have an employer sponsoring them, selected on the basis of their nominated occupation, age, skills, qualifications, English language levels, and employability;
Employer nomination, for those who have an employer willing to sponsor them;
Business skills migration, which encourages successful business people to settle in Australia and develop new business opportunities; and
Global Talent, for exceptionally talented individuals with cutting edge skills in priority sectors identified by Government. In addition, Australia’s Distinguished Talent program provides, a small category for distinguished individuals with special or unique talents of benefit to Australia, such as sportspeople, musicians, artists, and designers, who are internationally recognised as outstanding in their field.
