End Corporal Punishment In Schools In Sri Lanka - Vision 2020 Say ‘No’ to aggression Dr. Tush Wickramanayake, Physician, and Mom of Two

8 May 2019 02:50 pm Words : Indika Madapatha Sellahewa Photos : Rushiru Tharanga In a bid to end corporal punishment in schools in Sri Lanka, Dr. Tush Wickramanayake Daughter Of Late Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayake heads a campaign with several other responsible activists who are renowned personalities in Sri Lanka. “I’m a social activist if you could call it that now, because of my own personal experiences and my 11 year old daughter being subjected to corporal punishment in January 2018. When I tried to take some action against it I realised that every authority that is responsible for child welfare in this country is crippled into some extent. These authorities seem to be so crippled with so many defects, that I found out that our children don't have any protection whatsoever. Hence, I started this organisation, I lodged it along with a group of other parents, the name is ‘Stop Child Cruelty.’ We launched it on International Women’s Day on the 18th of March 2018, but soon it became a huge national campaign, and we launched a national campaign on the first of September, 2018, and the campaign was endorsed and accepted by the President. The main objective of our campaign is to stop corporal punishment in all schools in Sri Lanka by 2020. The vision is ‘End Corporal Punishment in Sri Lanka Vision 2020’.
