When Women Take Centre Stage

Asian countries governed by patriarchal ideologies have put women in the back seat from time immemorial. Although female goddesses belonging to the Hindu religion’s pantheon have dominated historical and religious epics, the situation is still not satisfactory even in countries such as India.
Women of menstruating age are acknowledged as ‘religiously unclean’ thereby banning them from exercising their fundamental right to worship at numerous temples. This is how the Sabarimala Temple made headlines when a historic Supreme Court verdict lifted the ban on women of menstruating age entering the Temple, thereby allowing them to pay homage at the sanctum sanctorum. Women’s activism has thus taken shape with various groups coming in to light to challenge patriarchal ideologies and standup for equality.
