With the recent UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) report “Global Warming of 1.5 °C” people were understandably concerned. The report states that we have an estimated 12 years to reduce our carbon emissions to avoid hitting a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees of pre-industrial levels, which would mean it would be extremely difficult for us to reverse the effects of global warming. It’s not all doom and gloom though. Although many people believe that we as individuals don’t have the power to create change, especially when the job is so big, this isn’t actually true. All over the world individuals, companies, community groups, and local Governments are all putting their thinking caps on and looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions and one of the easiest and most accessible areas to act is with recycling. This is especially important for island nations such as Sri Lanka as we have limited land space for waste management, as well as the beautiful ocean that surrounds us that needs protecting.
