Children are the fruits of society, but they are a vulnerable group as well. Without proper care and nurturing, they would be misled to take wrong turns in life. Taking care of children from birth is a challenge for many parents due to various reasons, one of them being poverty. As a result these children would end up in children’s homes and would be deprived of their basic right to grow up at home. Hence Professor Hermann Gmeiner thought that it’s important to meet the needs and protect the rights and interests of children. This was the beginning of SOS Children’s Villages back in 1949. Founded by Gmeiner himself, SOS Children’s Villages is an independent, non-governmental organization currently with 564 Villages present in over 130 countries around the globe. Here, the approach focuses on quality care in a homely environment for children.
