Spices of Ceylon…
Spices which were easily grown in old Ceylon added divine flavours to food, amplifying the taste. These unique spices were considered a treasure, so that kings gifted other kingdoms with spices as a token of friendship because spices were equally valuable and cherished such as pearls and gems.
According to history, archeologists have found traces of Ceylon spices in 4,000-year-old Egyptian tombs. When the divine taste of Ceylon spices was known across continents, Persians, Greeks, Arabians, Indians and Western Europeans were drawn to the pearl of the Indian Ocean along the silk route. Thus Ceylon became the focal point in the silk route which every ship landed to be blessed with the essence of treasured spices of Ceylon. Later on, the Western Nations who saw the business opportunity, wanted to own this treasure for themselves, that they fought terrible wars over the island and colonized it three times. With the circle of time, after gaining independence, Sri Lanka still wears the treasured laurel on her head called ‘Sri Lankan spices’. Cardamoms and Cloves are cherished among many Sri Lankan spices because of their unique taste and extreme aroma. The two spices proudly depict the true essence of the island.
