Today, most families are small families where the number of family members have gone down to basically two, in most cases - the mother and the father - children having left the family either for studies abroad or permanently domiciled in another country.
The families which have children and extended families living with them, the Vesak season is a good time to get the young and the old together to engage in many activities that are connected to religious celebrations. Making vesak lanterns, going to the temple, engaging in "sil" programmes, helping out at many community programmes arranged during the vesak month, are a few of the times where you can be together as a team . The city of Colombo as well as many major towns having been named as special "vesakkalapa", are full of beautifully crafted vesak lanterns. Going to view the many lanterns in the night, with your family members is a joyful experience which would go down in your book of memories that would be most cherished.
