Maha Shiva Rathri is a great festival of the Hindus, celebrated annually to honour God Shiva.
The festival is revered by chanting of prayers, fasting, yoga activity and meditating on God Shiva and practicing ethical values such as honesty, integrity, non injury to others and forgiveness. Festivities go on all night and devotees stay awake to celebrate and pray. Both married and unmarried women pray on this day to God Shiva to bless their marriages and find husbands for the unmarried. On this day, Milk and Sweetmeats with fruits are offered to God Shiva and women also pray for their husbands and sons.
This night which usually comes every 13th of February is the night that Shiva performed the divine dance of creation of mankind. It is also said to be the night when Shiva and Parvati joined in marriage. Offering icons as the ‘linga’ to Shiva to retreat from past sins is also practised on this day. Hindu devotees believe that worshipping the Shiva Lingam will pacify God Shiva and he will bestow his Godly powers to make them happy and live peacefully.
