10 September 2019 10:10 am Words : Indika Madapatha Sellahewa Photos : Jagath Dharmakeerthi The launch of the Polonnaruwa Historical Volume which was themed ‘Narapathi Yugaye Sita Janapathi Yugaya Dakwa’ and the book on Moragahakanda Dream Reservoir was held in a grand ceremony recently at the BMICH under the auspices and guidance of HE the President Maithripala Sirisena and attended by The Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, The Maha Sangha, Parliamentarians as well as the country’s leading intellectuals and dignitaries. The event which was organised by the Presidential Office saw some grand performances depicting the kingdoms of the Polonnaruwa era with an introduction to the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great and other reigning kings of the kingdom, the agricultural feats and marvels of the irrigation technologies adapted during the eleventh and thirteenth centuries of the Polonnaruwa district in Sri Lanka. The book ‘Polonnaruwa’ painstakingly researched and compiled together by some of the country’s top intellectuals, is predominantly aimed at highlighting the Polonnaruwa era which has not been given a larger publicity throughout history as that of the Anuradhapura era. The people behind this major piece of work are, Tikiri Herath Gunatilake, E. A. Wickramasinghe, L. A. Jayatissa and the advisory board, Professor Emeritus Daya Edirisinghe, Rtd. Senior Prof. K. A .P. Siddhisena, Rtd. Senior Prof. A. A. D. Amarasekara, Senior Prof. Lakshman Seneviratne, Senior Prof. Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, Rtd. Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa, Late Rtd. Prof. Ranitha Ratnayake, Prof. Yamuna Vasantha Kumarihami Herath, Prof. Ukkubanda Karunananda, Rtd. Prof. Ajitha Thennakoon, Prof. Ajith Dissanayake and H. M. Gunaratne Banda. President Maithripala Sirisena himself, hailing from the Polonnaruwa district, in his introductory remarks to the book says, “I grew up with a sense of awareness in astounding cultural and social surroundings, my childhood, adolescence and adult life passed by the historical ruins of Polonnaruwa and was engulfed by the light, air and the breezes that fanned by the ruins of Sri Lanka’s second kingdom from Siyane Korale to Meda Egoda Pattuwa in Polonnaruwa, which helped shape my life with the virtues, aromas and essences of that environment”.
