Spring lightly tickles the Mediterranean landscape smeared in dots of iris blossoming this time of year. Mary Magdalene along with a group of loyal women start their day before the break of dawn, journeying towards Golgotha where rests the body of the crucified Saviour cocooned in linen cloth. Once she approached the site she gasped in shock and disbelief. The heavy stone that sealed the door to the tomb had been rolled to the side. Strips of linen cloth were strewn where the body was kept, the tomb was bereft of decay and death. The other women caught up and witnessed the preternatural occurrence, and fear gripped their hearts. Then an angel of The Lord appeared and comforted them by saying, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.”This year, the sacred and joyous celebration of Easter will be celebrated on the 20th of April. However, multitudes of the faith start their journey towards celebrating the resurrection of The Lord Jesus Christ weeks before, on Ash Wednesday which marks the period of lent – a period of repentance and spiritual purification. ‘Holy Week’ signifies the last stretch, aptly portraying the crucifixion of Christ on the cross, His burial and the most anticipated event – His resurrection on the third day which is what we now know as ‘Easter Sunday’. It is a season that serves as a reminder of the power of Christ and how He overcame the grave so that we can enjoy the ultimate gift of eternal life.
