Valentine’s Day, celebrated on 14th February, has evolved dramatically from its historical origins to its modern-day expression. Rooted in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration held in mid-February, the day took on a more romantic tone with the advent of Saint Valentine.

The name is believed to honour a Christian martyr who defied the Roman emperor’s orders by performing secret marriages. Over time, Valentine’s became associated with courtly love in the Middle Ages, marked by poetry, handwritten notes, and tokens of affection. In the past, the day was simple yet deeply meaningful. Romantic gestures were personal and heartfelt. Letters penned with flowing ink revealed emotions too tender to be spoken aloud. Gifts were modest, often handmade, such as a pressed flower or a lock of hair.
