As citizens of this beautiful island we’re privileged to celebrate many auspicious events. This is because we are a multicultural nation. We celebrate Thai Pongal, Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Easter, Christmas, Vesak, and Ramadan. These are only a few from the many religious and cultural events we celebrate all year long.

Thai Pongal is celebrated on January 14th every year. The month of January is the harvest season in Tamil homes. Pongal refers to rice cooked in milk and sweetened with brown sugar or jaggery. On a full scale it is a three-day festival of nature-worship. It includes feeding the birds that are part of the beauty of nature, and offering thanks to the cattle, which give milk and plough the fields..
The Thai Pongal Festival is a harvest festival; one can say it is the Tamil equivalent of Thanksgiving. It is held to honour the sun, for a bountiful harvest. Families gather to rejoice and share their joy and their harvests with others. The sun is offered a “Pongal” of rice and milk.
