Sri Lankan Women in Early Childhood Educawtion outside our wonderful island have made inroads in delivering the best practices required in the field. They have been honored and recognized for their dedication to the subject of the early years. My search led me to Professor Champa Sakunthala Perera in LA, California, who has been engaged in early childhood practices these past 34 years. On a private visit to Sri Lanka I caught up with her to exchange ideas on the subject of Early Childhood Education and what it means for future educators.

We were instantly on the same page. Warm, sincere and the kindest heart ever she came across as a committed and determined individual who would go the extra mile to assist teachers reach their goals. Professor Champa is planning 2 interactive workshops in Colombo and Kandy in July for preschool and primary teachers. She hopes teachers will take her experience and lessons to heart in order to help the children they are working with around the country. This I believe. We can’t get to every child but can definitely get to every teacher if there is commitment to help themselves. Professor Champa holds an associate degree in child development and liberal Arts, a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Arts in Education/Adult Education & Training. She also earned a Child Development Site Supervisors Permit issued by the Department of Education. She is approved by the Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) as a trainer for the Preventive Health & Safety for Child Care Providers Course and also a Health & Safety Institute (HSI) Instructor. She uses curriculum and materials approved by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority’s Preventive Health Training Program. The course includes one hour of Nutrition & Led poisoning and instills valuable skills and knowledge for caregivers in this important sector.
