This time of year provides an excellent chance for all Sri Lankans to get together, express appreciation, and rejoice as one country via the various fascinating rituals, tasty traditional sweetmeats, and entertaining activities that are part of the holiday. What makes Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations so remarkable and unforgettable is the fact that the customs and traditions are exclusive to each. There is a seemingly never-ending list of things that needs to be done in preparation for the New Year, from cleaning and repainting the house to shopping for new clothes for the family and making the traditional sweets. Tradition often includes the buying of a new clay pot.
