Denushka Weeraperuma

Denushka Weeraperuma has been hailed as one of TV’s most outgoing, fun loving persons who seek challenges every passing day.  Initially known to all as the former first Runner up at the Miss Working Girl 2013, in less than a year Denushka has come a long way from modeling and acting. A proud product of Visakha Vidyalaya, Denushka earned her Bachelor’s in Business Management from the Middlesex University, London alongside a higher national diploma in Human Resource and Marketing. Her meteoric rise has also included her successful shows hosted by her and regular appearances in many social events which has given her the stepping stone in many directions in the entertainment business. By Kathyusha Kariyawasam What was the first show you ever did? “It was the daily morning show on Prime TV which is now known as CSN”. How did you get into becoming a Television host? “I got the opportunity for it few months after my first movie “Challenges” was released”. How long have you been doing this? “I started in 2009 and it has been almost four and a half years”. Have you always wanted to be a presenter? “I never even dreamt of it. My plans when I was in school were very different. But then I guess things just fell into place after starting work as a television presenter back in 2009”. What’s the energy like on set before you record? “It’s calm at times but if it is a live program the energy is very high. Everyone’s trying to get everything in place even few seconds before the program starts”. What has been your best moment as a presenter?   “It would definitely be the first day as a TV presenter. I was so nervous to do a live program and when the program was done I felt like I have finally found a job which makes me content at the end of the day”. What are you up to since the beginning of this year? “Since the beginning of this year I have been conducting a new program on Art Television. I am also involved in organizing a pageant called “Runway supermodel”. At the sametime involved in a stage play named “Ministar” and pretty busy with going around Sri Lanka with it”. Some advice you would give to someone aspiring to become a TV presenter? “I would say it’s not easy as it looks. And since this job requires 24/7 service at most times, you should really love your work and not see it as something you want to complain about at the end of the day. And most importantly punctuality and patience is a must to become a TV presenter”. Is it a career path that you would recommend? “It is most certainly. I love meeting new people and facing new challenges every day. So this is the perfect job for a person like me”. How do you try to improve on your presenting skills? “I improve my skills mostly by watching other TV presenter host programs. And I read a lot so I become very fluent when I speak on TV”. Where do you see yourself in the coming five years? “I see myself working for Discovery Channel as an executive producer in another 5 years time”. Something that you know now that you wish you knew when you first started? “I wish I knew how amazing this job is so I would have started it way before I actually did”. You also model. Tell us how it has been modeling in Sri Lanka? “I won’t call myself a model since I just do it on and off but it is a different world when it comes to modeling. And what I have realized is that the Sri Lankan fashion industry is blossoming and most of our models have a very bright future in front of them”. Describe your fashion style to us. “I’m a person who loves to dress comfortable. But I also try to be a trendsetter whenever I have the opportunity. I love mix and matching and most of all I love to be updated and dress according to the occasion”. What do you like about Sri Lankan fashion?   “I love how updated Sri Lankans are about fashion and most importantly we do know what’s hot and what’s not. A big improvement over the years” Who are your top four designers? “I absolutely love Brian Kerkovan and then it should be Tom ford, Donatella Versace and Christian Dior”. You act as well, how does one go about getting into the acting business? “Acting is another field I love and the negativity people have about actors are mostly just misunderstandings. Every field, every job has its lows and highs. And acting is like any other job”. What are some of the difficulties of the acting business? “There are different people from all parts of the society in this field, so one should know how to move along with them and get the work done”. Is it true that when you are an actor / presenter or even a model, you have to change yourself in order to be accepted into the entertainment business? “Doesn’t any job require some sort of change? In acting what we have to change is the way we communicate with others in order to make everyone feel they are in their right place. And one doesn’t have to destroy their dignity to do so, if that’s what this question is hinting at”. You also prefer theatre. Is it more difficult to get involved in theatre than on screen acting? “It is hard to get into theatre since it requires more skills and a lot of commitment. But it is the best way to learn acting and its best”. In your opinion, what is a good age to begin to pursue an acting or presenting career? “In my opinion both of these careers require a lot of time, commitment and a good knowledge about the society and people.  So it’s best to pursue it as a careers after concluding ones studies”. Other passions apart from becoming a television host? “I’m a very passionate dancer and a tennis player. Even from school days I saw myself as a successful tennis player. Who knows, maybe someday” What is next for you? “Next for me would be a job opportunity at Discovery Channel. It’s one of my life long dreams”. Denushka talks about her Family: Support from her Mother / Parents / Sibling “My parents are the ones that helped me in every possible way to make me who I am today. I am more than grateful to have such wonderful parents. And not forgetting my sister who has always been so supportive and maybe my biggest fan. My friends are also a part of this journey and I owe it to them for being by my side and helping me in every possible way to become a better TV personality”. Denushka’s mother Darshika Weeraperuma talks about her daughter: “My first child and she is the one who gave me the precious title of mother. She brought the love and brightness to our lives. This little girl who grew up to be my best friend, loving, caring and truly amazing, she is a treasure all my happy memories of the past and the best gift of my life. Love her forever.” Television Presenter Saasha Karunaratne talks about Denushka: “A Refreshing Beauty, She’s one of the few who knows exactly what she wants and will stop at nothing to get it; I Love how her passion and Drive shows even in the way she walks!”
