The Veheragalla Samudragiri Viharaya is a historic temple within minutes of the Southern beach stretch of the world famous Mirissa town. Declared as a National Heritage Site by the Department of Archaeology, the temple is believed to have been originated in the 18th Century.
The Veheragalla Temple is unique and mostly important for its 18th Century murals painted on the walls of the Viharaya. The ceiling also depicts beautiful images portraying the talents and attention to detail of the artist. All the paintings on the surrounding walls depict Jathaka stories during the times of the Buddha. The Ven. Podi Hamuduruwo The Chief Incumbent of the Viharaya preserves a collection of centuries old Ola leaf manuscripts.
