The second budget airline to enter the Sri Lankan market after the 30 year war was Fly Dubai. With the recession that took the whole world by storm more concentration seems to be diverted towards the budget airlines to keep the cost low to give more options to the customer.

Speaking on the occasion was the CEO Fly Dubai Mr. Ghaith Al Ghaith, who travelled on the inaugural flight, “We are delighted to be able to expand our range of destination in the South Asia subcontinent with the start of our flights to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination and by making travel to the capital a little less complex, a little less stressful and a little less expensive , I am confident this new route will be a popular one”.

The pupils of the School for the Deaf at Ratmalana recently staged a variety show titled “Pipena Piyum” at Ladies College Hall. The evening included a multitude of their inborn talents highlighted by the efforts of the students and teachers. The theme portrays children endeavouring to rise up in life with parental care and proper guidance from their teachers and elders around them. All children require love, affection, guidance and advise to grow up as good human beings and worthwhile citizens.

The Deaf School of Ratmalana was the first institution to cater to the special needs of children who are differently able and was established in 1912 by Ms.Mary Chapman, a Missionary from England. Over the years many have made significant and generous contributions towards the progress and expansion of the school and today it is one of the leading special schools providing education and soft skills to 243 resident and non-resident students.

Mrs.Marie Wijeyratne, Principal of the Deaf School stated that, “although many people say that deafness is a tragedy one can experience in life, over the years the students have conquered this disability and proved their true mettle. They have been able to overcome all barriers and obstacles through sheer self determination and courage. Their Alma Mater has nurtured and guided them in their quest for excellence.” Her words were absolute truth when we witnessed the performances by these talented group of students and we hope that people will continue to support these students and provide them opportunities of being socially acceptable.

What is the best method of Delivery if your Baby is Lying in Breech Presentation?

When the baby is lying in head down presentation the head stretches the tissues of the birth canal and helps opening of the neck of the womb during the process of labour. As the head is the largest part of the body which is not compressible , the birth canal should be open enough for the head to be born first. During the descent of the head through the birth canal, the head or skull changes its shape to fit into the birth canal and this is called ‘moulding’ of the head. When the head is born first in this way, the rest of the body comes out easily.

When the baby is in breech presentation, the bottom comes out first and the head comes out last As the breech is compressible , the breech can be born even before the neck of the womb is fully open. Also, in breech presentation the head does not have a chance to change its shape to get adjusted to the shape of birth canal. Therefore it can take longer time for the head to be born after birth of the body in breech presentation. When the baby’s body is born first it stimulates the respiration and baby starts to breath before the head is born. This can give rise to damage to the baby due to the lack of oxygen as the baby starts breathing while the head is in the birth canal before it is born. When breech babies are born vaginally, additional manipulations are necessary to assist delivery of the lower limbs and shoulders and this too can give rise to injuries to the baby as well as the mother Because of the above reasons , almost all babies lying in breech presentation are delivered by Caesarean section at present as vaginal delivery can be risky.

Is there a place for a Vaginal Birth in Breech Presentation?

If you are in your second pregnancy, following a previous uncomplicated normal vaginal birth , you can consider having a vaginal birth. Your doctor will go through the risks, benefits , advantages and disadvantages of a vaginal breech delivery compared to a Caesarean birth and decide on the best method of delivery for you and your baby.

Having a vaginal birth can be more difficult when a baby is in breech. This is because, during labour , the head is the largest and firmest part of the baby’s body. In the head-down position( cephalic presentation), the head comes out first opening the birth canal ,and therefore it becomes easy to guide the rest of the body through the birth canal. In the breech position, the body comes out first, and it may be hard to guide the baby’s head out of the mother’s body. This is because the baby’s body may not stretch the cervix enough to allow room for the baby’s head to come out easily. It is a mandatory requirement for a skilled and experienced doctor to attend to a vaginal breech delivery

However at present almost all mothers with their babies in breech presentation are delivered by a Caesarean section to minimize the complication to the baby and mother.

A while ago when the global pandemic Swine Flu reached Sri Lanka the Health officials remarked that Sri Lankans were most likely to die of Dengue. Now dengue has reached dizzying heights and is well on its way to making new records. The current trend of dengue is rewriting history with 140 deaths for this year. It is a marked increase to 2004 which reported 83 deaths and was once deemed the peak year for Dengue.

Dengue is on a rampage and most often victims are caught off guard while most Government officials’ getaway with the slogan that prevention was better than cure calling for the Public to play a greater role in combating the spread of Dengue.

In a country with a high literacy rate and people over informed about dengue prevention is still a battle to be won. Investigating into the horror stories of Dengue we came to understand that in many cases parents and doctors alike were fooled by Dengue that led to the death of their loved ones.

1. A single mosquito can lay about 200,000 eggs.
2. Mosquitoes can get immune to chemicals after a while, eg- vapourizer, mosquito coils etc.
3. 200 ml of water produces 20,000 to 30,000 mosquitoes.

What is the Solution in BTI?

BTI is the abbreviation to the scientific name Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis. This is a bacteria that destroys mosquito larvae. It is used world over to combat mosquito breeding. It is an effective biological larvicide meaning that it is 100% natural and has proven to be non harmful to humans. Unlike the chemical based pesticides in the market. The BTI kills the mosquito larvae and not the mosquito therefore it should only be used against mosquito larvae and not on the flying mosquito.

When the BTI is in the water it destroys the mosquito eggs, larvae, pupa and adult mosquito in all the stages before it finally becomes a mosquito in its life cycle. The Governments intent in bringing down BTI from Cuba will help combat Dengue in the long term. Since a lot of mosquito breeding areas like canals, mine pits, unused wells and coconut estate pits are huge breeding areas and are hard to clean so the best option would be to mix the BTI onto the body of water and keep re-doing it.

Miracle saver and remedies at Home

The papaya leaf juice deemed the miracle life saver of dengue is very easy to make and has proven to work wonders according to Dr. H.M.N. Ameen who is a Community Medical Officer at the Walipitiya Hospital. Dr. Ameen said that he had initially tried it out last year and that it was not his discovery but he had heard about it from a colleague Dr. Jayalath who had known a soldier who was treated by this when he contracted dengue in Haiti while serving for the United Nations.

“I had tried on myself first and then on a few relatives when they were suspected of having Dengue. I have given it to my child too,” Dr. Ameen said. He said that he advised his patients to use it since it was not poisonous. Later he had discovered that when used on patients with Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) he noticed a significant increase in their platelet. And having discovered that it worked on more than 20 DHF patients he said that it was his belief that it had proven to be the life saver.

Dr. Ameen said that anyone could make the papaya leaf juice if they washed a few leaves and removed its stem and pound it together with water. The juice is very bitter so one has to mix bees honey to be able to drink it, he said. “Children from 1 to 5 years should take a dose of 5ml, 6 to 12 years should take a dose of 10 ml and teenager and adults alike should take a table spoon,” Dr. Ameen said. He said that if the dosage increased it would result in a radical increase in the platelet although it is yet to be researched and therefore the safe amount would be the ones he has stated.

A lot of citronella oil based products are used to apply on the human body and households since it is a scientifically proven mosquito repellant. And also Homeopathy Dr. Yasmin said that her homeopathy treatment was effective since it helped the patient strengthen their immune system. And she claims to have cured more than 15 patients of dengue

Watch out for the Symptoms

Buried within our subconscious is this everlasting wish to look young and beautiful forever.

Unfortunately, it takes a lot of hard work and effort to maintain one’s youthful looks and most people, men and women alike have been turning to plastic surgery and several other medical procedures as the answer to this yearning.

However, during a recent seminar conducted on the topic ‘Clinic based medical procedures to reverse the signs of ageing’ British plastic surgeon Dr. Haren Jayasinghe discussed the importance of non invasive medical anti ageing therapy as opposed to the more complex plastic surgery etc.

During a quick Q and A session with LW, Dr. Jayasinghe elaborated more on the non evasive medical anti ageing therapies that are being introduced to the Sri Lankan consumer.

Dr. Jayasinghe tells us why medical anti ageing therapies are a better option to choose from as opposed to plastic surgery?

I’m promoting medical anti ageing therapies because they are safer and not invasive like standard plastic surgery. It’s less painful and most importantly there is no cutting of the skin. The process is conducted with the use of cosmeceutical skin care products and derma rolling that penetrates right into the skin. This is the best alternative for those seeking plastic surgery to correct those ‘hard to get rid of’ skin problems.

So you’re’ telling me that someone can correct skin problems and reverse ageing with creams and there wouldn’t be any painful surgery? Is this procedure really effective?

Yes, we use scientifically proven and tested cosmeceutical skin products to attack those problem areas. The potency of the cosmoceutical creams is magnified using a derma rolling to increase skin penetraiton and re generaiton. Derma rolling is also known as collagen induciton therapy or CIT. Derma rolling is used to clear the bags under the eyes, reduce fat, lighten the skin etc. We use individual blends of cosmeceuticals to improve the skin’s laxity, remove dark circles and get rid of wrinkles.

These medical anti ageing therapies which are available in America and Europe can be as effective as plastic surgery and they are also much safer and cheaper. There is no pain and rarely no side effects and there is no pre or post recovery issues to deal with. There’s also the advantage that these creams are created to deal with specific skin problems you face, each cream is individualistic, not something off the shelf. If you add these therapies to your daily beauty regime you will see results within a few months of use. The results of these therapies, can take between 2 to 3 months.

Can these procedures be done on both men and women? Does one have to be extra careful after therapy? How does one maintain the skin after therapy?

Yes, these procedures are done on both men and women and as of now it is being performed by certified beauticians at Ramani fernando salons, Nayana Karunaratne Salons and the Cutting station. Once the client has undergone the therapy, we don’t just leave him or her halfway through. We do follow ups to decide if we need to increase or reduce the strength of the cream. And of course we check up on their progress periodically.

They have to maintain their skin by drinking plenty of water, exercising and eating a balanced diet, which is the usual practice. Once therapy begins you have to ensure that there is no direct exposure to sunlight, unless you are wearing a good sun block with dual UV filters.

Important points about medical anti ageing therapy

1. The aim of the skin treatments is to rejuvenate skin without recourse to surgery or other invasive procedures.
2. Treatment is based on 4 creams. Spot lipolytic (fat reduction), depigmentation, improving laxity, treating oily skin.
3. We combine the creams with collagen induction therapy (CIT) also known as derma rolling.
4. Collagen induction therapy: works on the simple principle of stimulating skin proteins called collagen and elastin production by forcing the dermis into a wound healing response to the trauma induced by the micro punctures of the skin needling/ derma rolling procedure.
5. Creams are medical grade and backed by research evidence.

Percutaneous collagen induction therapy: an alternative treatment for scars, wrinkles and skin laxity.

Skin laxity, rhytides and photo aging are generally treated by ablative procedures that injure or destroy the epidermis and its basement membrane, at least in the beginning and subsequently lead to fibrosis of the papillary dermis. The ideal treatment would be to preserve the epidermis and promote normal collagen and elastin formation in the dermis. Percutaneous collagen induction takes us closer to this ideal.

Fine wrinkles, lax skin, scarring and stretch marks treated with percutaneous collagen induction using the Derma roller - CIT to produce tighter, smoother skin. Most patients had only one treatment, but some have had as many as four treatments.

Patients were prepared with topical vitamin A and C cosmetic creams for a minimum of 4 weeks preoperatively.

On average, patients rated their improvement between 60 and 80 percent better than before the treatment.

Percutaneous collagen induction was started in 1997 and has proved to be a simple and fast method for safely treating wrinkles and scars. As opposed to ablative laser treatments, the epidermis remains intact and is not damaged. For this reason, the procedure can be repeated safely and is also suited to regions where laser treatments and deep peels cannot be performed.

The couple used to have major fights. After one particularly vitriolic eruption on both sides, she walked out declaring her intention to divorce him. There was no-one to stop her. The lawyers lapped up the case and a year later, she was Mrs.Ex.

A divorce should never be embarked on in anger.

So many young couples and not so young couples find it hard to get on with each other and think that divorce is the way out. You may toy with the idea but you should not forget that you married ‘for better or worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do us part” You may not have married in church but these vows hold true for every marriage.

Let’s face it. You and I are not as tolerant as our grandmothers in days gone by. We are not so patient.

Besides, “Women’s Liberation” has come to stay and the idea has been imbibed that a woman should free herself from the shackles of society and its institutions such as marriage. “The door that Nora slammed shook the world” from Ibsen’s play “A Doll’s House” marked the beginning of “Women’s Lib” and that women were no longer prepared to take everything lying down.

But it takes two to tango and marriage is at best a compromise. There should be give and take and there is no room for impatience in a marriage. Both husbands and wives must be patient with each other and with their children.

If you have a marital problem, contact “Sri Lanka Sumithrayo”(telephone 2692909) and go for free and confidential befriending on a regular basis. If, after years of befriending, the marital situation does not improve, then you can consider a divorce.

But remember that going through a divorce is a traumatic experience, compounded by the necessity of rebuilding your life. You also have to get used to the utter loneliness of the divorcee along with the despair that may drive you into the arms of just about anybody!

Getting married again is not easy for a divorcee because she has to first work herself free of all the bad memories of a failed relationship. If not, she may carry all her emotional baggage into a new relationship and this can be toxic.

But if in your marriage, you are hurting and everybody’s suffering, then perhaps you could consider divorce as an option. But you must be dead sure that you will have no regrets once the divorce decree is made final.

You may think that infidelity is a ground for a divorce but I know couples who have come together again afterwards and who now have a working marital partnership in spite of having committed adultery. So you see, immature ideas of love have no place in a true marriage.

You have to give each other space to grow in a relationship. In the words of the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran, “Let there be spaces in your togetherness” Just because you fight, it does not mean the end. Be patient and pray to the God you believe in to give you courage! Only when you have tried every single thing in the book and more besides and you are still suffering, then you can consider divorce as the very last resort when there is ‘irretrievable breakdown of marriage.”

True friendship is hard to find, a friend says. But she knows it when she sees it. And so do many of you. I had a discussion amongst a tight circle of friends what friends really meant and the degrees of friendship we shared.

Acts of Friendship

Himali was sitting with a big group in the school lunchroom when she accidentally knocked her drink onto her lap. As word spread that it looked like Himali had wet herself, the laughter began to mount. Then she noticed her best friend doing something strange.

“She poured water on herself,” Himali said.

For some, the defining moments of friendship were profound, such as the soul mate who helps you through the grief of losing a family member or camps out in your hospital room when you’re sick. For others, it’s smaller gestures that loom large, the friend who talks for hours when you’re feeling alone, even if it means speaking till your credit runs out. The one who helps you with your homework, evenwhen she hasn’t done her own; or the friend who helps you search for your retainer, even when it means going through the garbage from the school lunch.

What Friends Do for You

Big or small, it’s actions that seem to count the most in friendship. In a time when we can chat effortlessly by text and IM, talk is getting cheaper. Many of you believe that the evidence of true friends is what they do to show their loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness or willingness to make a sacrifice when you need help.
Anushka explained she discovered the difference between a close friend and casual friend on a school trip.

“I got sick, and my friend ran to the bathroom after me to hold my hair back as I threw up,” Anushka said. “She stood by me, while my other ‘friend’ yelled at me to get off the floor and clean it up.”

What You Do for Friends

It works both ways: A majority of the people agrees to do as much for their friends as their friends do for them. Sometimes the most treasured acts of friendship are those for which you expect to get nothing in return, not even credit for a good deed.

“The nicest thing I ever did for a friend was when I let her date my ex without ever telling her that I was against it,” a friend said. Another said, she remembers the day she went clothes shopping with her best friend, who is overweight. The saleslady was being rude to her friend because there was so little in her size and nothing fit quite right.

Swyrie is proud of how she helped her friend that day. “I had like an armful of clothes for myself (and may I add these clothes were to DIE for!) and I put all my clothes back and said, ‘I don’t like what they have in here, why don’t we go somewhere with better clothes, not these cheap ones.’”

The One and Only

Many thought it was important to have a best friend, one who stood out from the rest.

“In reality, you are truly blessed to have one true friend to the backbone,” Anilka, said. “All the others are basically your acquaintances.” That’s what Rehana meant when She described a person’s friends being “like a pyramid” with one at the peak and others in supporting roles. Some of my friends described the communication between best friends as being a perfectly clear connection, almost as if it’s on a frequency only they can hear.”A true friend understands you, even when you’re not talking,” and “We practically finish each other’s sentences,” were the echoing sentences in our discussion we were having.

The Wisdom of Friends

Often what you look for in your best friend is good judgment. Jackie said the nicest thing a friend did for her was to tell her mom a secret Jackie had told to her friend, that she was extremely depressed.

“My friend was scared and even though I told her not to tell anyone, she knew she had to,” Jackie said. “She ended up saving my life, and I am grateful.”

Not everyone thinks it’s important to have one best friend. Since Amalie thinks together her friends make up all the aspects of what one “true friend’ would be. She has friends who she confides anything in and trust them to keep it all a secret. She went on to say she has smart friends, funny friends, goofy friends, ‘bodyguard’ friends (a.k.a. the friends who will stick up for you no matter what), and just friends who are there on the weekends who want to hang out. So really, no one person can fill every void in your life, she believed to what the majority of use declared that it is those who you confide in to be the ones and others to be the casual wanted but not necessary types, that are easily replaceable.

“Friendship isn’t easy”

Friendship isn’t easy. To hear many of you tell it, making a good friend is almost like adding a new family member. It comes with risk and responsibility.

Sometimes what a good friend needs from you is brutal honesty, not a cheerleader. “A true friend is a person who would really tell you how bad you look in that bright pink top, even though you really like it.”

Romance, like distance, can complicate things. Many told of friendships that soured after their friend began seeing someone.

When Friends Move On

Many of you learned the true value of friendship after it was gone. Lots of you urged people to work at their most important friendships, rather than letting them fall apart after a fight or fade away.

And for some, it was OK if good friends only accompanied them for part of their journey in life. People grow and change, and so do their friends. Friends come and go we all chorused but there are some friends that you just can’t live without and they stick to you like conjoined twins as you to them.

cover personality this month is a lady that has brought in knowledge and expertise from world over to share with her motherland on sugar crafts. Dushanthi Madanayake is the youngest daughter of the famous cake decorative specialist Helen Madanayake. Dushanthi ventured into this field at the tender age of six and continued to shine from school days on the decorative art of cakes. This month she shares her secret of success with the readers of LW. As a woman, culinary skills is one particular field that everyone appreciates but only a few women boldly venture into this field and gain the knowledge and expertise.

Education and expertise

Educated at Good Shepherd Convent Kotahena, Dushanthi was a student with many different talents. She was a member of the netball team but her main interests always lied in testing, decorating and reading more information on the new techniques of cake decorating.

This artistic talent was put into practice when she was in school where she took part in a competition, but unfortunately she was not awarded the prize as the judges thought that she had help from an adult, which was not the case, but this never made her give up, instead she just tried harder than before. As her father was a businessman she managed to travel quite a lot with her family. She had the opportunity to visit bakeries in Paris, London, China and Europe to gain more knowledge about different cuisines around the world. In 2004, when she moved to the United States of America to gain her Degree in Business Management at Wichita University, KS, she was fortunate to work as an Artistic Designer at Cameo cakes where she designed hundreds of cakes for various occasions. She also completed the Wilton Certified Cake Decorating Courses and selected to be an Instructor. Her continuous desire to refine new designs and techniques made her return to Sri Lanka and open a school of cake artistry to enable many others interested in the field but lack the support to enhance the knowledge, receive her expertise.

Unforgettable moments in life

When she was in Seventh grade she entered the Inter-school cake competition. The cake that she decorated as I said earlier was chosen as the first prize but the judges turned her down as they assumed that she has received support from a professional cake decorator. However, Dushanthi managed to prove them wrong as she never gave up hopes but continued to pursue until she became a professional with all the knowledge, guidance and determination that was within herself. The next unforgettable experience for her was celebrating two years of marriage with her High School sweetheart recently.

Supportive Family

Her father Chandra Madanayake was a Businessman, mother as stated before was an expert in cake decorator, whilst her elder siblings are Gamini, Cahmari and Dharshani Madanayke, who also owns Amakthi Cake Shop. She was the baby of the family and received all the attention from her parents as well as her siblings and that made her grow with lots of warmth and love that she shares through her cake artistry. Cake artistry is an art not so popular in our country but it is one of the most exclusive types of art that is much looked forward to by many people. Her passion and ambition in life was always to be the best cake artist in the country.

White Flower Academy of Cake Artistry

Located in the heart of Kotahena town is the White Flower Cake Artistry – the number one professional cake decorating school that offers many courses under one roof. Dushanthi returned to Sri Lanka in 2010 and started this academy to create more opportunities of learning about cake artistry to those interested that thrives for knowledge in this field.

The courses available include Diploma in Cake Decorating & Sculpting, The Master Course, Sugar Cookie Decorating, Culinary Diploma, Diploma in General Cookery, Gumpaste Sugar Flowers, Lambeth – Continental and lace work for structures, Royal icing flowers/colour flow, Candy Making, Marzipan, Cup cakes and Seasonal Courses.

Her cup cakes are really awesome and you could consult her for any occasion that you require from bridal showers, baby showers, birthday or wedding or even a corporate event as she personally attends to all the needs of her customers. Her time management is remarkable and she has the time to personally overlook everything that takes place and the classes are conducted with modern techniques and she undertakes catering for any occasion with an emphasis on sugar arts.

The academy offers a variety of culinary skills and she conducts them in three locations Kotahena, Colombo 7 and Piliyandala, so if you want to find out more details you could contact her on 2459603 from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 7pm and on Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

We at LW, wish Dushanthi all the very best in all her future endeavours.
